The update expands the scope of the standard beyond securities to include OTC derivatives, baskets, emission allowances and carbon credits.
The ISO standard that defines the ISIN and its related descriptive elements has been updated.
The standard – ISO 6166, Financial services – International securities identification number (ISIN) –provides a uniform structure for the identification of financial instruments as well as referential instruments using a unique identification code (the ISIN) and associated minimum descriptive data.
The standard, last revised in 2013, has been updated to expand its scope to include other types of financial instruments besides securities to which the ISIN code can be allocated – including OTC derivatives, baskets, emission allowances and carbon credits.
The update also introduces new minimum descriptive elements, including the LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) for issuers, where available.
